Borgar Haugland – A Life in Yellow and Black

Annonse:

For over 70 years, Borgar Haugland (born 1941) has held Start close to his heart. Ever since he joined the club as a nine-year-old in 1950, he has been part of Start’s journey — as a player, elected official, volunteer, and cultural contributor. Few people have such a long and deep connection to the club as Borgar.

Player and Club Man

Borgar began his journey on the pitch. As a young boy, youth player, junior, and eventually Old Boys player, he represented the club for many years. In 1961, he also contributed to Starteren, the club's membership magazine, already showing his commitment beyond the field.

Elected Official with a Heart for Community

Starting in the early 1980s, Borgar took on a number of official roles in the club. He has served in the Football Committee, the Seniors' Club, the Audit Committee, and the Senior Council — often as chairman or deputy chairman. He has been a steadying and unifying force in many of the club’s key arenas, and his contributions have been marked by both wisdom and a deep passion for the good of the club.

Through more than four decades of leadership and volunteer work, he has helped shape IK Start from the inside — with an eye to both history and the future.

Volunteer and Source of Inspiration

Since 2007, Borgar has also been part of Start’s Media Team, where he contributes with dedicated volunteer work. More recently, he has been involved in the club’s archive committee, working to preserve and share Start’s rich history.

What sets Borgar apart is not just his loyalty — but the calm, thoughtful Southern Norwegian demeanor he brings to everything he does. He is a reassuring and positive presence in the club environment.

Honors and Recognition

For his lifelong service to the club, Borgar has received several of Start’s highest honors:

  • The Appreciation Trophy in 1989

  • The Gold Badge in 2011

  • Honorary Membership in 2020 — as the 29th recipient in the club’s history

A Start Heart with Power in His Legs

In addition to his club work, Borgar has also impressed as a recreational athlete. At the age of 80, he completed the Birkebeinerrittet — an 86-kilometer mountain bike race through challenging terrain. He has also participated in the Nordsjørittet and the Color Line Tour. A living testament to drive and zest for life — both in and outside the club.

A Start Heart for the History Books

IK Start wouldn’t be the same club without people like Borgar Haugland. He has carried the club’s identity, values, and community through generations.

We at IK Start thank Borgar for a lifetime of dedication — for all he has given, and continues to give, to the club.
