Kai Eriksen: Mr. Start
Kai Eriksen (born 1947) from Torridal is one of those who has truly shaped IK Start from the inside – with his heart on his sleeve and a dedication that spans more than five decades.
He began as a volunteer in the club between 1973 and 1975. All his spare time was spent helping the team with practical tasks: preparing equipment for training and matches, booking travel and hotels, and making sure everything around the squad ran smoothly. In 1975, he was hired as caretaker of the newly opened Starthallen – a role he combined with continued voluntary work.
In the 1970s and ’80s, the spirit of volunteerism was strong at Start, and Kai was at the heart of it. As football gradually became more professional and financial considerations grew, so did Kai’s responsibilities.
There have been many highlights over the years, but there’s no doubt that the league titles in 1978 and 1980 top the list. One unforgettable moment is Steinar Aase’s iconic back-header from Svein Mathisen’s free kick – looping over the Rosenborg goalkeeper – a memory etched in the minds of Kai and many Start supporters.
Kai has stood by the club through both triumphs and tough times. He’s remained at the center of it all – emotionally invested through every high and low. One of the more touching stories is how he shed a tear crossing Lundsbrua after Start’s dramatic comeback against Lillestrøm at Åråsen in 2019 – a moment that says everything about his love for the club.
During the construction of Sparebanken Sør Arena, Kai was offered a new role as Operations Coordinator – a position he still holds to this day. Few know every corner of the stadium better than he does.
For his tireless dedication, Kai received the Norwegian Medal of Long and Faithful Service during the club’s centenary celebration in 2005. Ten years later, he was named an Honorary Member of IK Start – a recognition that reflects the deep respect held for him by the club and its supporters.
Kai Eriksen is not just a colleague or employee – he is a symbol of true club loyalty, continuity, and commitment. To many, he will always be: Mr. Start.
