Finn Hansen (EN)
A Driving Force in IK Start and Norwegian Football
Finn Hansen (1943–2016) dedicated much of his life to IK Start. He was one of the club’s most loyal and influential figures – a driving force behind the scenes, an inclusive leader, and a true enthusiast. In 2012, he was named an Honorary Member of IK Start.
His dedication to the club was inherited – his father, also named Finn Hansen, served as chairman of IK Start both before and after World War II. Two generations of the Hansen family have thus played pivotal roles in the club’s history.
A Life In and For the Club
Finn Hansen had a long and multifaceted career at Start, holding numerous key roles over several decades. He was instrumental during the club’s golden era in the 1970s and '80s, working tirelessly to support new players both on and off the pitch. If someone needed a job, help with daily life, or simply a supportive hand, Finn was often the first to step in.
He had a big heart for the club’s social and community-building efforts. He often initiated gatherings, shared training sessions, and events that strengthened the bond among players and staff. He also organized several training camps in Denmark, which he meticulously planned and executed with great enthusiasm.
A Driving Force Off the Pitch, Too
Finn’s commitment extended far beyond the club itself. He served as a vital liaison with the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) and the Norwegian League Association. Remarkably, he remains the only person from Start ever to sit on the NFF’s executive board. He also had a sharp eye for sponsorships, and his work in that area was crucial for the club’s financial stability and growth during key periods.
A Smile, a “Yes,” and a True Ambassador
Finn Hansen was known as a “yes-man” – positive, solution-oriented, and always ready to help when needed. With his warm smile, kind nature, and genuine love for the club, he was a fantastic ambassador for Start – whether dealing with players, fans, sponsors, or the broader Norwegian football community.
He was a unifying presence, a kind soul, and a true “Starter” – in every sense of the word.
