Carl Viggo – A Central Figure in IK Start for Decades
Carl Viggo Axelssen (born 1950) has served IK Start in many capacities: as an elected official, volunteer, investor, and cultural bearer.
He has held numerous roles in and around the club. He was a member of the main board, serving as deputy chairman in 2006 and chair of the environmental committee in 2009. His contributions have always been marked by long-term thinking and a strong commitment to the club’s best interests.
In the late 1990s, Carl Viggo took the initiative to register start.no – the club’s first web address. At a time when few sports clubs had considered the internet a vital communication tool, he recognized its potential to increase the club’s digital presence and laid the foundation for the strong online identity Start enjoys today.
He has also been a vital resource in the club’s day-to-day operations. Whether it involved renovations, the clubhouse, events, or social initiatives – Carl Viggo has always been there to help. During the clubhouse upgrade at Sparebanken Sør Arena, he was among those who led the way with hands-on effort.
Alongside his work for the club, Carl Viggo has had a notable career in business, including executive positions in Kristiansand. His broad network, strategic thinking, and solid experience have made him a respected business leader – a strength that has also benefited IK Start. He has served as a crucial bridge between the club and the local business community.
When Start Toppfotball AS was founded, Carl Viggo was part of the local investor group. He served on the board and was an important supporter during the transition to more professional operations. He represented both the club’s values and the investor group’s commitment, working to ensure that Start remained rooted in Southern Norway’s culture and community.
For his many years of service, Carl Viggo Axelssen was awarded IK Start’s Gold Badge in 2012. In 2016, he was named an Honorary Member – the club’s highest distinction.
He remains active in the club’s Senior Council, contributing his experience, historical insight, and warm personality. He is one of those who remembers – and reminds us – who we are, where we come from, and what it truly means to be Start.
IK Start can only be proud and deeply grateful for Carl Viggo Axelssen’s years of dedication. He has helped shape the club – and stands as a living example of what true club spirit means.
